Purpose of the Programme: Phronesis Students Development Trust (PSDT) NPO primarily serves to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals ‘4’ (QUALITY EDUCATION - Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people’s lives and sustainable development). PSDT is a South African Registered Organisation. Our Services for children are limited to; • ECD to Grade 7, • An educare centre, providing primary basic education and support for grades R - 7 • An after school centre, providing partial care for children attending a primary school Based in Kya Sand Pipeline Informal Settlement and serves beneficiaries in the Kya Sand, Msawawa, Inanda, Fundisi Informal / Rural Settlements in Johannesburg North, South Africa, which is home to over 45 000 of people (at last count), including vulnerable children. Since its inception in 2009 in the area, Phronesis Students Development Trust has established an early childhood development centre / school that currently Serves an average of 160 children every year. The main purpose of the centre is to develop and implement activities aimed at supporting the spiritual, physical and educational needs of orphaned and vulnerable children. Being a ECD/school located in an informal settlement, Phronesis’ main objective is to see to it that no child is left behind and deprived of an equal opportunity to a quality education and better life simply because they were born in poverty. We try to achieve this by providing a good quality education and wholesome early childhood development program to our learners at minimal or no costs to the parents. Further, we take a step towards alleviating poverty, malnutrition and stunted growth by providing healthy nutritious meals twice a day to the children of Kya Sands; meals that end up being the only meals the children receive due to the seriousness of poverty and hunger in the area. Lastly, the purpose of the centre is to be a place of hope and a safe haven for the children where they can learn through play and escape the social ills present in the community such as child abuse, gender based violence and domestic violence.
