Do you think “education is the most powerful tool to change the world” ? Do you want to help young learners to achieve their dreams and get a university degree? You can make a huge difference in the life of young people from Alexandra township. The “Sizanani Mentorship Program” was launched in 2007 with the mission to provide career guidance, life skills support and mentorship to young learners from Alexandra. Our mentors are South African and foreign professionals who coach Grade 9, 10, 11 or 12 learner(s) from Alexandra township. Learners and mentees are part of the “IKusasa Lethu project”, run by St Mary’s school (Waverley) which offers Saturday classes in five subjects to top learners of Alexandra high schools. * In 2022, 102 mentors – 55 % from South Africa, others are expatriates living in Joburg - are assisting 118 learners. Mentors are expected to meet their mentee(s) once a month on an outing independently organized or with other mentors. * Mentors play a crucial role by providing mentees with career information, counselling, motivation, communication skills and study tips. Except for the outings, there is no financial involvement in the programme. * Motivational speakers, professionals and students are also invited to talk to our learners. Workshops and a career fair are also organised to help them choose their future career. Other workshops are organised (well being, self confidence building, art and sports activities). *Bursaries are offered to university students and graduates are helped to find internships and jobs.
