The Union of Jewish Women (UJW) was established in 1931 as a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) to assist South African communities regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or gender. The Johannesburg Branch provides for newborn babies and their mothers in government hospitals and clinics; operates a feeding scheme in Alexandra and a soup kitchen for patients at the Hillbrow Community Health Centre; responds to crisis situations; provides skills training for the unemployed; arranges aftercare in Alexandra for the children of working parents and embarks on many more ad hoc projects.
