OCOF HHC strengthens the services and structures which support families at community level so that children can live safely at home and are not put into orphanages. More than 21,000 children are living in orphanages in South Africa. Fewer than 20% of them are true orphans - most have families who could look after them with the right support. Poverty, disability, violence and a range of other issues are forcing parents to give their children up, and the impact is lifelong. Children in orphanages have significantly worse mental and physical health and development outcomes than their peers who have grown up in a family, and are significantly more likely to be unemployed and unprepared to live independently when they leave the orphanage as a young adult. By supporting families to thrive, we ensure every child gets the opportunity they need to grow up in a loving home and fulfil their potential.
