#TopCause: Chic Mamas Do Care
One of this month’s Top Causes is Chic Mamas Do Care, based out of Durban. We’re recognising them not only for the dedication that they put into their profile on forgood, but for the work that they do in the communities they are present in. We interviewed them to learn a little more about who they are to share with, and inspire you.
Who are you and what do you do?
Chic Mamas Do Care Durban is the Durban wing of Chic Mamas Do Care, a South African not-for-profit, raising funds to support early childhood development projects in our neighbouring communities. Most of our fundraising is done through the sale of quality preloved clothing, in addition to other ad-hoc fundraising initiatives throughout the year.
Why did you get started?
Chic Mamas Do Care was started in Cape Town by Abigel Sheridan. She wanted to apply the charity clothes shop concept to high end fashion. Given that most women love buying new clothes and most also had things they could donate, it seemed like a perfect solution to raise money for the Cause. The charity was officially registered in 2010 and has since branched out to Johannesburg and Durban.
What is a story that keeps you going?
In Durban, we support two key projects. Umzamo Preschool & Creche in Reservoir Hills and House of Hope in Clermont. A particular story close to our hearts is Umzamo Preschool & Creche. Earlier this year, this wonderful preschool was running at full capacity, so funds raised through our fashion events were used to purchase a used container, to enable the school to increase their pupil intake. Acclaimed street artist, Giffy Duminy, kindly offered to paint the container, to create a vibrant, bold classroom to spark learning and creativity, optimism and hope.
We are delighted to have been able to support Nomusa Dlungwana, who heads up UmzamoPreschool, to undertake her three years of teacher training, as we believe that this is our most effective means of impacting the early development of large numbers of children. Nomusa is currently completing her final year of ECD training at Caversham Training Institute. This past Saturday, members of the Chic Mamas Team enjoyed a heartfelt morning at the Umzamo Preschool 2018 Graduation. It was clear for all to see, the pride and reward felt by Nomusa and the contagious enthusiasm she has on all her children. Moments like this are invaluable in reaffirming the work we are committed to doing and the great strides we are making in giving disadvantaged kids in our local communities the start in life that they deserve.
