An NPO as Job Creator in an Informal Settlement
How the Viva Village created 30 full time jobs assisted dozens of informal traders in the Alaska Informal Settlement, Mamelodi East
Imagine simply not having an income. Imagine not being able to buy food, clothing, pay for your children's education and care, not being able to afford a shelter, or the most basic commodities of life. Imagine the constant worry, the overwhelming despair, the anger and frustration, the constant struggle. Now imagine this: Almost a third of South African adults, do not have to imagine. They know. Creating and Facilitating Access to the Economy lie at the heart of Enterprise Development and Poverty Alleviation. The Viva Foundation believes very strongly that economic transformation through job creating and enterprise development, is a key element in turning the tide of crime and poverty in the country. For this reason, Viva is very proud that through the years, it had been blessed, to have the means to offer paid positions to its team and to facilitate enterprise- and skills development to many others. Even when one of our dear team members get a better job offer, or move into another field, we are not only sad to say "Farewell", but also proud that we played a roll in equipping them for that step. Presently, the Viva Village employs 30 full-time staff members, 25 of them from the communities around the schools. Every year, we are able to assist a few dozen informal traders and entrepreneurs through training and material assistance. Through volunteering and internships, we provide hands-on skills transfer to people entering the job market. This is something to be excited about!
