More about The Rural Education Development Corporation
Rucore was established in 1991. The name Rucore originally stands for Rural Education Development Corporation, given our focus on rural areas and development through education about nature, culture and learning to care for the land we live on. For the past 35 years Rucore has tested its sustainability thinking at various communities across South Africa, notably at Tlholego Ecovillage (outside Rustenburg in the North West Province). Tlholego is one of the earliest experimental multi cultural permaculture and ecovillage communities developed in South Africa. The Ecovillage is living testimony to Rucore’s work, a growing cross-cultural community that sustains itself through food production and products, education and training, events and consulting. Two of the directors currently live there as part of the community, constantly applying their thinking at how to integrate all peoples to live and care for land they live on - diverse socio- economic and environmentally and cultural inspired. Rucore has also been involved in practical innovation of rainwater harvesting, food gardening and sanitation. Most current activities are in inspiring youth in integrating modern and indigenous cultural Tswana activities aligned to both visual and performance art, indigenous culinary exploration using food as medicine - growing and processing organic food onsite. Learning to live in a healthy way emotionally, spiritually together in a changing climate, political and economics.
