More about The Labon Foundation
We are a registered NPO that operate in the townships of Bonteheuwel and Bishop Lavis. These areas are poverty stricken and have a high unemployment rate. Our main focus is poverty alleviation, food security and creating job opportunities. We run a community feeding scheme five days a week. To many of our beneficiaries this is the only nutritional, cooked meal they have for the day. We also operate community food gardens with the aim to provide fresh vegetables to the community kitchen. The people who work in the gardens receive a stipend from the EPWP (Extended Public Works Programme) and VPUU (Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading). We build capacity by teaching home gardening and entrepreneurship skills. We want to transform our community food garden into a small-scale urban farm for three reasons: (1) Supply more produce to the soup kitchen and surrounding ECDs. (2) Sell produce to make the project more financially viable, (3) build the capacity of those working in the gardens to run their own projects, businesses or become more employable.
