More about Recruitagri - Farming with Graduates

Recruitagri is a registered NPO offering agricultural graduates a years practical farming experience to add to their CV's and to form part of the agrarian reform in South Africa. Our vision is opening theoretical learning into practical learning for agricultural graduates and to provide the knowledge centre and network platform that is so urgently needed in this country. Recruitagri interviews possible candidates for the programme in September of each year, selectively taking on committed and interested agricultural graduates. We offer one years practical farming experience in the macadamia, avocado and kiwi industry. Graduates from all over the country may apply and we select regardless of province. We do ask for an age of 25 years and younger and a valid driving licence. The farm manager plays an integral part in the project, mentoring a one on one farm manager to graduate relationship. We have a 90 percent practical and a 10 percent theoretical curriculum covering important topics as in fertilisers, harvesting, pruning, irrigation, scouting and the legal aspects of farming. Other topics as in human resources, the interview process and economics are also covered. We run short skilled development courses like tractor driving, fire fighting skills and health and safety to add to the overall practical experience. Assessments are also submitted after each monthly set lecture, marked and used as a general guideline when interviewing for employment. We have qualified lecturers in their field of expertise who handle the curriculum side of the programme. We have 9 farms involved as our Grower Partners, providing different farm exposures to all graduates and facilitating job opportunities within those farms. We run an interview Day in October every year inviting prospect employers with a view to interviewing potential graduates as employees. This is the agricultural network we aspire to provide to the graduates increasing youth employment opportunities. The graduates are provided with accommodation, set uniforms and a stipend of R5000.00 a month. The project begins in February and runs until the end of November. We have an induction week beginning of February, where farm managers and admin staff are introduced to the graduates - the curriculum, indemnity forms, rules and regulations are all explained during this week. Transport to and from the farms, bus routes and taxi options, are carefully mapped out for the graduates and after a couple of days the graduates have established their whereabouts and settled into the year. We rotate the graduates every two months on different farms working with different farm managers to facilitate exposure to all methods of farming and different managing skills. A mentorship programme is available for monthly meetings, feedback sessions and general wellbeing for the graduates. Whatsapp groups are setup and communication and feedback is accessible to all graduates, admin satffand farm managers at all times. We have a website www.recruitagri.com where further information on the programme can be found, CV applications can be handled efficiently and up to date articles can be published together with acknowledgment of donors and our committed partners. Our projection for the up and coming year would be to expand to another hub in a different Province facilitating expansion of the programme. The funding for this initiative would need to be in place before launching. We have spent the last 3 years perfecting the model, launching our online platform and securing our marketing. We are confident that we can reach potential agricultural graduates in all areas of South Africa through social franchising and a successful model of providing the stepping stone, with like-minded partners.
