Talking About Race
Talking About Race is an original Play Africa programme guided by the core values of South Africa's democratic Constitution: equality, freedom and human dignity. Play Africa is committed to being an anti-racist organisation. Together we are working to build a more just and equitable South Africa and a better world.
Studies show that children begin to notice differences and classify objects and people from a young age. By age two, children begin to label skin colours and notice racial differences. Research shows that by age five, children can demonstrate signs of racial bias, including treating people from one racial group more favourably than the other. Talking About Race empowers South Africa's children, parents and educators with the skills, vocabulary and experiences needed to respond to racism and celebrate our rich diversity to create a more just and equitable society. We believe when children begin having open and honest conversations about difference from a young age, they will grow up to be more comfortable engaging with people who are different from them, more aware of when others are being treated unfairly and more confident in their abilities to fight against the injustice they see or experience. This programme aims to create a more just society by: 1. Supporting parents and educators to talk to children about race and racism - Talking About Race equips parents and educators with tools, techniques and confidence to initiate and lead conversations about race, bias and inclusivity. 2. Promoting positive self-identity in all children - Talking About Race introduces children to age-appropriate conversations about race and racism in a way that celebrates diversity and difference, and helps promote a positive self-image in all children.
