More about MOT South Africa

Life-skills development amongst the youth in South Africa is critical as the majority come from poor, disadvantaged backgrounds. The youth face many daily challenges, including gangs, violence, drug and alcohol abuse, absent parents, exposure to high-risk sexual behaviour and peer pressure. MOT SA ensures that 13 000 youth gain self-awareness, courage, resilience and life-skills to make conscious choices, to build healthy relationships, and accept responsibility for their behaviour and future. Challenge: The need for life-skills training amongst the youth is critical as 75% of our youth come from very poor disadvantaged backgrounds, in which parental guidance is often lacking. MOT SA is the only organisation providing life-skills training at TVET Colleges in the Western Cape, and focuses on High Schools where it is most needed. MOT addresses the challenges associated with low self-esteem and confidence, lack of values, high-risk behaviour, acceptance of diversity and interpersonal relationships. Solution: The MOT programmes are implemented over a long-term period in a structured classroom environment. Each MOT session has a specific theme and learning outcomes, and explores the development of particular life-skills, e.g. self-awareness, dreams and goal-setting, building relationships, adopting sound values and positive behaviour, communication and problem-solving skills, creative and critical thinking skills, values-based choices and taking responsibility, the courage speak out and to say no. Long-Term Impact: Research has shown the significant impact of the MOT education on the willingness of young people to respect others, to listen to other people's opinions and to make their classroom a more friendly place. 96% of participants have stated that MOT had assisted them to be themselves and to accept themselves for who they are. 28% of young people, who have indicated that they had used alcohol, drugs or smoked, changed their high-risk behaviour which they attributed it to the MOT training programme.
