Pulane's commitment pays off!
Pulane gets sewing learnership after years of unemployment.
After attending our free women’s sewing classes, Pulane Mukwevho, a mother of four from Cosmo City, was selected to go on a two-week learnership at Intertex clothing. Pulane joined the sewing classes at JDC in September, after years of job searching. Pulane lost her job in 2016 after sustaining a car accident. Following the accident, she took some time to recover and heal. However, when she was ready to go back into the job market things had changed and it was a lot more difficult to find employment. With only her Husband working to provide for their family it became struggle to meet basic needs. After a while of searching for opportunities, she eventually came across JDC from her friend that we had assisted previously. She came to us disparate for any opportunity that would better her chances at getting employment. Fortunately, she came to us at just the right time, when we were starting the sewing classes. Pulane showed great interest in sewing, impressing the facilitators by her performance and commitment. She attended all the classes, always eager and asking questions, showing her interest in learning. She has an exciting energy that was infectious to the whole class. Following arrangements with Intertex clothing to host the sewing class participants for a short training experience, so that the women could put into practice what they had learned in class. A decision was made that Intertex would host one candidate to start – with the hopes of expanding it in the future. When the time came to choose the candidate who would go on the learnership, Pulane was the obvious choice. Pulane starts her learnership on the first until 14 December. Although it’s only for a short while, while she is with intertex she will be exposed to all aspects of working in a clothing factory, she may even discover in what area she would like to venture into . She is even hopeful that she will try her hand at an industrial sewing machine. We wish her all the best!
