Girl, you CAN do it! And Men's Tribe youth seminar and career expo, 2022.
COSMO CITY- Hope was installed in grade 11 and 12 learners of S'godiphola Secondary school as they learned about subjects needed for their chosen career paths and where to start. On March 26, the Johannesburg dream center (JDC) held ‘Girl, You Can do it’ and ‘Men’s tribe’ youth seminar, aimed at assisting children from poor backgrounds who have no clue of what they would want to become after high school. ‘’The event is aimed at children growing up in poverty who don’t really know what they can become in life because people are not investing in them, they are not seeing people tell them that they can become an engineer, because when people become an engineer in this community they leave" said Alicia Swanepoel CEO of Johannesburg dream center. "As the JDC , we are here to restore hope in them by bringing people who have made it in life coming from disadvantaged backgrounds to come out and talk about inspiring the to follow their dreams so that they can become CEOs, study actuarial sciences, become Doctors but they need to pursue it." Talking to the learners, guest speaker Khumbu Mkhabela said, ‘’a teacher may open a door for you but you need to walk through that door.’’ Learners received gifts, and one lucky learner receive a laptop. The lucky learner David Kioshy said "the career expo made a huge impact in my life as a matric learner by awarding me with a laptop which I will be using for research on courses I want to apply and study for. ’I am very appreciative and happy about this gift I received. My advice to others is that through perseverance and hard work were (learners) can make our dreams come true.’’ Nothemba Saveni, a [Social Woker] at S'godiphola secondary school said that the school was grateful for the opportunity given to their learners as they now have an idea of what to study at higher institutions.
