Embracing Wildlife Conservation

Keketso - Embracing Wildlife Conservation

Keketso, an 18-year-old girl from The Oaks Village, came to DAKTARI for a week of environmental education five years ago. Driven by a deep love for animals, she ventured into wildlife conservation. Eager to expand her knowledge, she applied for a work experience position as an animal manager assistant to enhance her CV and career. She arrived in late April 2024, excited to learn about animals and the environment from scratch. During her 6-month stay, Keketso immersed herself in various roles: from preparing animal food and cuddling meerkats to creating enrichments for animals, relying on her imagination to keep them engaged. She found particular joy in cleaning the cages and taking care of animals during stablings twice per day. Inspired by the community at DAKTARI, Keketso connected with like-minded volunteers and staff, united in their mission to protect wildlife and habitats. Her experience fueled her passion for teaching and agriculture, motivating her to pursue studies at the University of Limpopo with a focus on teaching children about agriculture. Reflecting on her time, she remarked, "Being here has been life-changing. It's about connecting with nature and understanding our role in its preservation." After her volunteering experience in DAKTARI and thanks to her university studies, Keketso's long-term goal is to return to her village to teach at school and positively influence the new generations.
