Bianca misses her bus to join Eco-Club

Bianca rather attend Eco-Club than arriving on time to the bus to go home

Bianca is one of the current 25 students that is enrolled in the Eco-Club program. For those of you who don´t know about it yet, Eco-Club is a 6 weeks-long program that Grade 9 students, from three different local highschools, can voluntarily decide to participate in. During these weeks the children will learn about geography, environmental education, and about their privileged flora & fauna. Twice a week the students stay after school to attend these lessons, many of them missing their transportation back home. Bianca is one of these. She has shared with us that she chooses to stay at school and miss her ride home “because it is important to learn more about Eco-Club and about the environment. Transport doesn't matter. I want to learn more about what they teach us in Eco-Club because I know nothing”. The goal of Eco-Club goes beyond merely environmental education. We thrive to teach the children to find new ways to overcome the environmental issues they might be aware of in their surroundings -littering, plastic burns, poaching, etc. By aiming a few steps farther, these students can make an impact through developing critical thinking and being role models for other people in their communities. In DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage we work towards creating environmental awareness and to making the upcoming generations understand that they are a crucial part of the solution. We strive to motivate and inspire the students to become a part of the change they want to see, as well as to make South Africa a better place.
