A family journey to break the cycle of poverty
Nkele started at Urban Kids Educentre, an only child. Her parents needed a safe place for her to be while they worked. As a receptionist at a local highschool, her mom was connected to education, but didn’t yet see the value of a strong preschool foundation. An emerging family, her dad was trying to start his own company and each month was a stretch to make ends meet at all. Paired with a sponsor, Nkele was able to attend Urban Kids for 3 years, learning what she needed for a good start in primary school. Then along came the twins! Applying for sponsorship again, the family stretched and enrolled both boys (again with the same sponsor that had helped with Nkele’s schooling). This year, the boys are in Grade R. Their dad came in for a visit in January and shared that they would not be applying for sponsorship again this year—and in fact, his business has grown and he can now become a sponsor! Urban Kids Educentre partners with families to give their children a solid start in life. They work to teach parents the value of education, helping them to plan well so they can find a good school for their children at each stage. This family has embraced education, prioritizing it for each of their children. Now that they’re in a strong financial place, they’re ready to pass the blessing on. (Urban Kids is one of three Botshabelo Progammes: Babies Home, Urban Kids Preschool, UpliftED Teacher Training Programme) From sponsored to SPONSOR, this is a good news story worth sharing!!!
